Traces of Ink
2023
Sculpture

Hong Kong visual artist Matthew Tsang Man-fu begins his creative process with the intrinsic properties of objects and materials, bringing them to life through sculpture and installation. Drawing from daily life experiences, his works construct an imaginative, poetic space rooted in Chinese ink wash aesthetics. Through his practice, the artist seeks to explore the possibilities of transforming traditional Chinese ink art from a two-dimensional medium into a three-dimensional space.
In this featured artwork, the artist blends cement with paper pulp as a foundational medium, infusing it with the fluid bleeding effects of Chinese ink. Displayed within a historical building, rows of fractured sculptures are intentionally placed by the artist within the long river of time to bear witness to the evolution of the city's history and culture. By merging traditional Chinese ink with Western sculptural elements, the exhibition guides viewers from the present moment into history, inviting them to experience a cityscape uniquely woven from the intersection of Eastern and Western cultures.
